How Custom Orders Work

Every Urbana Woodworks cutting board is handcrafted to order in our Urbana, Illinois workshop. Because no two boards are exactly alike, custom orders follow a simple, intentional process designed to give you clarity, flexibility, and a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

Here’s what to expect:

1. Choose Your Board & Place a Deposit

Start by selecting the cutting board style that best fits your needs. Each product page includes customization options such as size, edge style, engraving, and functional add-ons.

When you place your order, you’ll submit a build deposit. This deposit reserves your place in our build queue and allows us to review your selections before work begins.

Deposits are applied toward the final cost of your board.

2. Order Review & Confirmation

After your order is received, we’ll personally review the details and follow up by email to confirm:

  • Final pricing

  • Estimated build timeline

  • Any custom details (engraving layout, special requests, etc.)

If anything needs clarification, we’ll sort it out before the build begins. No surprises.

3. Handmade Production

Once details are confirmed, your board is built by hand from carefully selected hardwoods. Because wood is a natural material, grain patterns and color variation are part of what makes each piece unique.

Our focus during this stage is:

  • Structural integrity

  • Clean joinery

  • Balanced design

  • A durable, food-safe finish

Quality takes time, and we don’t rush it.

4. Completion & Final Payment

When your board is finished, you’ll receive a message with photos and a final invoice for the remaining balance. Typical build timelines range from 4-6 weeks depending on customization and current order volume.

Once payment is complete, we’ll coordinate local pickup or delivery details.

5. Pickup & Care

All boards are finished with a food-safe oil and ready to use. Care instructions will be provided so your board can age beautifully with proper maintenance.

With basic care, your cutting board is built to last for years.
