From Garage to Grain: The Story Behind Urbana Woodworks

When I first picked up a piece of cedar fence picket and turned it into something beautiful, I had no idea it would spark a business. What started as a weekend hobby in my garage quickly turned into a passion for designing functional, handcrafted wood pieces that tell a story — and now, it's become Urbana Woodworks.

I live in Urbana, Illinois, and I’ve spent years in this community — it's where I’ve built a home, a family, and now a business. Every piece I make reflects my love for both the craft and the place that inspired it. Whether it’s a cedar harvest basket, a custom herb stripper, or a license plate birdhouse, each item is built by hand, one at a time, with purpose and heart.

Why I Build

There’s something timeless about woodworking. It forces you to slow down, to focus, to appreciate natural materials and how they come together. I started building because I loved the process. I kept building because I loved seeing people use the things I made — in their gardens, kitchens, patios, and homes.

The best part? Many of the people I’ve met through this business have shared their own stories with me. Some are looking for the perfect gift. Some want a custom project that fits just right in a space. Some just want something made by human hands instead of a machine. And I get to build all of that.

What You’ll Find Here

This blog is where I’ll share more than just products. I’ll give you a behind-the-scenes look at the projects I’m working on, from reclaimed wood builds to custom engravings. You’ll get tips on caring for wood pieces, ideas for your home or garden, and maybe even a few mistakes and lessons learned along the way.

Let’s Build Something Together

Thanks for stopping by. Whether you're just browsing or thinking about a custom piece, I hope this space inspires you to appreciate craftsmanship, creativity, and community.

If you’ve got an idea, I’d love to hear it. And if you see something on my Instagram that catches your eye, let’s make it real.
